English Bull Terriers or Bullies, as they are affectionately known, are distinctive, medium-sized dogs known for their unique egg-shaped heads. Active, energetic and full of mischief, the English Bull Terrier is not a dog breed for the faint hearted or first time dog owners!
Whilst they’re loving and fun personality will have you laughing on a regular basis their stubborn, boisterous and independent side can lead to frustration. Make no mistake, bullies are smart and can easily learn to dominate their owners who will need to adopt a firm approach to training. Big softies at heart who thrive on attention and being near their humans…they certainly have no understanding of personal space. You will never be lonely with a Bullie around.
Selective hearing is a term used a lot about Bull Terriers…they seem not to hear their name being called from a few feet away but could hear a biscuit wrapper being opened from a mile off! This breed originates in England, where the bull and terrier breeds were originally bred for vermin control and blood sports. In the mid-19th century, James Hinks began breeding the bull and terriers with English White Terriers, eventually resulting in the modern breed. The Bull Terrier has a distinctive 'egg-shaped' head, triangular eyes, and a robust body.
Health issues with the English bull terrier
· Deafness – where dogs are born without hearing. Most common in White Bull Terriers.
· Lethal acrodermatitis – a genetic disease that causes fatal skin and growth problems. This only affects white Bull Terriers and a DNA test can screen for carriers of this.
· Kidney problems
· Heart problems
· Luxating patella's – where the kneecaps slip temporarily out of place. · Atopy – allergies causing itchy skin and ear infections.
If you are prepared to be strong, patient and understanding of their unique and demanding personality, there is no more loyal, lovable, and entertaining dog companion.
